To hit your 2024 goals...
Are you living for yourself, or for the world's approval?
Here are 3 Methods to help you stick to your goals:
In sailing, there's a concept known as the "Lee Helm Effect."
This principle highlights that a small misalignment of the tiller or rudder, even by a few degrees, can lead to a substantial course deviation over time.
This is often the case in life.
When we don’t do a clear breakdown of our goals or have clear systems to check in on them, a sway in direction can often lead to failing the goals.
Therefore, it’s imperative to focus on the direction:
1. Write your goals down.
The easiest way to ensure we stick to the direction of the goals is to write them down.
Harvard research suggests only 3% of people write their goals down.
Yet those who do are 3X more likely to succeed than those who don’t write them down.
Once written down, place them in an area that you will be going to daily.
For me, it’s at my desk.
Being exposed to them constantly keeps them at the front of your mind.
2. Set Daily Milestones
Once these are written out, set daily milestones that work towards your goal.
It doesn’t have to be an hour of active work, it may only need to be 10 minutes a day of focused work towards your goal.
This builds momentum and discipline towards your goal, making it easier to stick to in the long run.
I often find waking up 30 minutes earlier to work towards your goal can make a huge impact.
3. Use 3 Questions System
This is a great reflection task in order to check your goals are still as relevant as they were at the start of the year.
They are:
1. What really matters right now in my life and are my Big Goals still aligned with this?
2. Are my current Daily Systems aligned with my Big Goals?
3. What do I need to cut from my life to progress more efficiently?
Answer these questions monthly and you’ll be far more aware of the direction you want to go in.
Moving in the right direction is never easy.
But it’s far better to take the time to ensure you’re heading in the right direction.
Than going 100mph towards something that doesn’t matter to you.
TLDR:
- Write down your goals
- Break them down into daily tasks
- Reflect monthly on whether they are still relevant
