Speaking with someone I hired years ago, he said it stood out to him when we worked together how I had emphasized that we all needed to think like owners of our company.
When making a decision, I encouraged people to say to themselves: "If this was my company, what would I do?"
Some corporate types told me that was a very risky thing to say. "What if they take advantage of the expense account, or make bad decisions!" they would argue.
For me, it wasn't a risky move. In fact, all it took was a belief that people are fundamentally good, and knowing that owners do whatever it takes to succeed.
