Should I stay or should I go?
This week, I commented on a LinkedIn post about a doubt that can creep into anyone’s mind: “Am I good enough? Or would the company be better off with someone else in my role?” While the comment in question was about the Founder/CEO, it applies to all roles.
It is common for us not to always feel adequate. In fact, this makes us humble and human.
The key to knowing whether it is indeed time to go lies in a couple of self-reflective questions:
- Am I having a good time doing this role?
- Are my feelings related to a single or few incidents, or are they general?
- If not me, then who? Who is the person who will be better at this than me?
- If I leave, then what? What will I do? What will the company do?
You will get closer to an answer by reflecting on these questions.
If you decide to stay, what changes do you need to make so that this conversation with yourself does not become a recurring one?
If you decide to leave, what steps do you need to take, and in what order?
In either case write them down. Sleep on them (more than one night, preferably) and then speak to someone about them.
If you do not have that someone, I’d be happy to.
All my best,
Peter
