New hires and their first focus
Whenever I hire people I give them three things to work on as they start:
- Something they have done before, that they can do without much thought
- Something on the company to-do list that is urgent to get done
- Something that is critical for the company, and which is beyond the immediate experience of the person hired.
Doing this gets people integrated into the business quickly, gives them a prompt feeling of success, and gives them an opportunity to see how they can accomplish seemingly impossible tasks in our environment.
